@connealymd: What Actually Drives Hypothyroidism: 🦋🦋🦋 Chronic stress → Constant stress raises stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which suppress thyroid hormone production and conversion (T4 to T3). Estrogen dominance → Excess estrogen blocks thyroid hormone at the receptor level and increases thyroid-binding globulin (TBG), reducing free, active hormone. High cortisol → Prolonged high cortisol slows thyroid hormone release, conversion, and cellular uptake. Liver dysfunction → The liver converts most of the inactive T4 hormone into active T3. If liver function is impaired, this conversion is blocked. Hiah intake of PUFAs (polvunsaturated fats) → PUFAs suppress thyroid function at the mitochondrial level, interfere with thyroid receptors, and promote oxidative stress that damages enzymes involved in hormone production and conversion. Low carb / low calorie diets → Restricting carbs or calories signals famine, causing the body to downregulate thyroid output to conserve energy. Environmental toxins (fluoride, chlorine, BPA, etc.) → These chemicals block iodine uptake, damage thyroid tissue, and disrupt hormone signaling. lonizing radiation → Radiation exposure, especially from medical scans or environmental fallout, can damage or destroy thyroid tissue. Nutrient deficiencies → Low levels of selenium, thimaine, zinc, magnesium, B12, and vitamin A impair hormone production, conversion, and function. A lot of times treating hypothyroidism means addressing all these factors, not just adding supplemental T4. The thyroid is sensitive and everything is connected!
