I tell my girls “No one knows and anyone who tells you they do is trying to control you or sell you something” 🫰

We’re atheists and my kids have never seen anyone pray and on Thanksgiving when my family started to pray my 4 year old started yelling “what the heck is everyone doing??!!” lol

We have two kids going to a seventh Day Adventist school, one kid went to a Mormon Summer camp and a Baptist summer camp back to back, one of our kids is going with his friend to a Presbyterian church and one kid who only knows the inside of a church because he went to a vacation Bible summer camp…and they all come home with all these thoughts, questions and ideas and the only thing we confirm is true is that none of us know what’s up there, down there, or out there…the only thing we can confirm is how it feels in our hearts. If it feels good to you, lean into that. If something feels icky or if someone is forcing you to believe or feel something, take a step back. And when they come to us stating something is a “fact” we let them know it is a belief and there is a difference. Keeping their minds and hearts open the best we can.

Ohhh this becomes a big thing as they get older. A real issue with friends. We’re not raising our kids religiously (ex-Mormons ourselves) but we are teaching them to be respectful, especially in the sense that if they contribute to other kids questioning their beliefs, those kids parents will absolutely shut our kids out. So we tell them not to talk religion with friends. Or if they do, just to keep it polite and surface. It can be hard because it’s a shared thing that they don’t get to share in, so it puts a little wall up between them and religious kids.

Yes, this is perfect. I also have my daughter in a religious preschool and I’m atheist. That probably makes people close to us go wait, what? But the reality is we don’t qualify for free preschool, we cannot afford a private preschool, and at the end of the day I can only model and encourage critical thinking for my daughter, as you did here, and the fact that I’m atheist shouldn’t hinder her from an education if a Christian school is all that’s feasible for us. Especially one that is teaching her academic curriculum that I know works and is beneficial to her. Sure, we could potentially homeschool her, but what she also learns in an academic setting is beneficial. I gotta weigh the pros and cons, fill in gaps, and sometimes put my beliefs aside for the better of her future. This is just what works for us. And also, my daughter is going to enter the real world. She is going to meet a plethora of people of different backgrounds and beliefs. She does need to know about them, what they believe and why, and that we can still be respectful while also disagreeing.

If there is one thing I’m teaching my kids, it’s that religion was made up by humans and they need to use their critical thinking skills to decide for themselves what THEY believe. And not to let someone else TELL them what to believe or that their own beliefs are wrong.

I had a unique struggle in this area because when my son was 3-6, he would randomly share stories with me about his life before he was my son, how he picked me to be his mom, what happens when people die, that only humans on Earth feel sadness…I hadn’t shared anything with him and every time I asked how he knew this he would just say “I know from a long long time ago.” So I just kept notes and recordings and figured when he starts asking when he’s older, I’ll share what he believed before he was influenced by others. And this kid has always referred to people as “humans.” 🤪

Yes! This! I also was talking to my kindergartener about God and we both agreed, at her lead, it only makes sense that if God exists, that God is a woman because women make life and everything beautiful. I was so touched she was challenging the norm and forming what feels good to her 🤍

My kids went to a christian day care/pre k. She’d come home and tell me about god and I’d just say “wow that’s such a fun story!” And then when she asked about god I go with “I’m not sure! “
