This is why I miss my Jewish community so much in Boston. I could simply exist in that space and know I was included because so many of us had shared ancestry and culture. I now live in Minnesota and it’s a STRUGGLE. I am atheist and struggle finding a secular Jewish community here. To feel exiled from even other Jews is simply painful.

Living the Dream :
We are insular because we were always excluded. We had to do jobs no one wanted, create clubs where we could belong, and we know that education is the way up. L’shana Tovah! 🍎🍏🍯🍯

I think group dynamics of human nature demand someone to hate and we are a good and easy target. Very much for the reasons you mentioned, but if it wasn’t for those reasons, they’d find other reasons. - I think a big part of it is that we are a “safe” people to hate. You can hate us as loud and proud as you want, and you’ll never really be banned or shunned from polite society and also it’ll never, ever cross your mind that we’re gonna retaliate by blowing up your city bus or exploding your office building or stabbing you on the sidewalk, because we won’t. Instead we’ll write a thesis and get a doctorate degree on the causes of antisemitism in an attempt to talk you out of it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I agree, but would add defensiveness and fear is also built into our propagandized zionist upbringing. Bad actors use this to twist the narrative and allow for unchecked discrimination of others.

Agree, would like to add: the conspiratorial lens is just the mechanism for the hate. It’s there no matter what we do. And the conspiracies shape shift to fit whatever hate is acceptable at the time. I believe that the bottom line is: we wouldn’t convert. And we’re still here. That is my belief as to why we are so hated.

You are loved! Just wanted to tell you that. I owe my career to the Jewish community for taking me in for graduate internships, busting my ass and making me work harder and focus more, and then hiring me after so graduated. They (Jewish Family Services) had more confidence in my ability to do good job than I did - and I carried that with me throughout my career in the medical field.

This is exactly the video I needed going into the High Holy Days as someone trying to reconnect with my Jewishness. L’shana tovah, and thank you for this.

Agree, I think the non proselytising creates suspicion, because if we're not converting people, then what do we want? Also add to this that we have a tendency to be in things like banking & entertainment bc they weren't considered 'respectable' fields for Christians (and indeed Jews in Europe were banned from landowning and many jobs except money lending historically)

Yes yes and yes. and you're right, in part, because of this, we are very confusing to people - they have no real framework because everything about us seems either contradictory or stereotypical. I think it's important now more than ever to be visibly Jewish -

A lot of it stems from jealousy. But of course the causes are complex. Thanks for contemplating this aloud and Shana Tovah!

We’re not kinda tribal. We are a tribal people. Before religion even came in we did everything like any other tribal indigenous people. We have tribal traditions we have ways we do things.

I’ve seen a new criticism that we only take care of ourselves, which we know isn’t true but at the same time we are creating new publishing houses because we are being pushed out of the traditional ones, so, yes.

I agree. I think there’s also an element of jealousy, due to Jews being insular we have developed very strong communities with strong community infrastructure - which is harder for most people to come by nowadays.

1st, Shanah Tova! I think there is an important word missing there - as Jews, we're not trying to assimilate, as that would lead to a loss of our identity. What we are seeking is to INTEGRATE - be a part of society while maintaining our ethnic identity (which also includes our religion, that's how it works for indigenous peoples). But when societies strive towards assimilation, integration is not good enough for many people 😔 which leads to suspicion.

Correct. And you could amplify that for immigrants. My family came to America when I was seven and the only people my parents ever hung at work or other immigrants
