In mid-1982, U2 was under immense pressure to write material for their third album, War. Bono originally wrote the lyrics as a simple, devotion-filled love letter to his new wife, Alison Stewart ("Under a blood-red sky, I want to be with you"). However, during studio sessions at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin, Bono was watching television reports about Poland's Solidarity (Solidarność) movement—the first independent trade union in a Warsaw Pact country, led by electrician Lech Wałęsa. The Polish communist regime had imposed brutal martial law, outlawing the movement and placing Wałęsa under house arrest. Bono began rewriting the verses on the spot, weaving his personal feelings for his wife into a narrative of resistance, hope, and political struggle: "Though torn in two, we can be one" reflected both a couple separated by distance and a nation divided by authoritarian rule. The themes of hope for the upcoming year aligned directly with Poland's fight for freedom. In a twist of fate, shortly after U2 finished recording the song, the Polish military government officially announced it would suspend martial law on December 31, 1982—just days before the single was released on January 1, 1983. The music video, directed by Meiert Avis, was shot in December 1982 in Sälen and Mora, Sweden. The band was forced to film in extreme sub-zero temperatures with minimal winter gear The video famously features four horseback riders carrying a white flag across a snowy ridge. Because the band members refused to ride horses in freezing weather after a long day of shooting, director Avis hired four local teenage Swedish girls to wear masks, hats, and heavy coats to double as Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. Chart Peak : UK No10.
