@motormouthpediatrics: Replying to @MirandasRightsToLife 10 minutes. I tried, y’all. 😂 But this distinction MATTERS. A child may present with the same concern of “they’re not talking” while the reason behind it and the treatment they need can be very different. 🗣️ Late talker → build LANGUAGE 👄 Apraxia → build SPEECH MOTOR PLANNING ❤️ Autism → support COMMUNICATION based on that child’s individual profile And yes, they can overlap. That’s why I keep coming back to differential diagnosis. We shouldn’t stop at “they aren’t talking.” We need to understand WHY. Same symptom. Different why. Different treatment. Grab a coffee. Apparently we’re having a CEU today. 😂 #ChildhoodApraxiaOfSpeech #Autism #LateTalker #SpeechDelay #SpeechTherapy
My boys are 7 and 5 they been diagnosed for few years with apraxia they just started with a speech therapist that’s doing DTTC therapy

My son definitely has at least oral apraxia, it’s so hard to find someone to diagnose him at 4

How do you know if it’s apraxia vs just a late talker? My son is 18 months old. Doesn’t say much. Babbles constantly and has like a conversation with me in his own words. He will see uh oh very good and clear but when he says up, it’s just like uhh. But I know he’s trying to say up. Sometimes sounds like he doesn’t fully say some words.

You literally touched my soul, because I'm trying my best with my 2-year-old son right now and I don't want him to be diagnosed as autistic when I feel it's just a speech delay, cause he's so smart and understands everything I say. he's just not talking yet.

So frustrating. My son is in speech. Doesn’t have any issue with receptive…it’s all expressive. Has an almost “own” language. The innotation in his voice while communicating is consistent. It’s almost like he is saying what he is thinking but doesn’t make any words. 🥺

What if they can say a million words and the sound of each letter, but are not conversational, doesn’t always answer questions but tells their wants and needs? Can not blow bubbles

My son understands, he can follow directions ( when he chooses). The other day he said “ hey, where are you going” first sentence I’ve ever heard him say. however, he still says some words for example: purple is “pur” he says words but will not communicate what he wants clearly He’s three years old. He doesn’t point hardly ever but I know he can. He can give some gestures like high-five but won’t wave hello or bye. He mostly hand leads to get what he wants. What do you think it could

So my little guy just turned 4. OT here. I’ve had him in therapy since 9 months (PT to start). The sp / ot. He was given an ASD dx. He’s been in aba and speech for 1.5 years. In the last several months I have questioned the SLP about apraxia. There’s a multitude of signs painting the picture. She says that’s not her area she specializes in functional communication for kids with autism. I said that I feel we are missing a window of opportunity as the fundamentals for apraxia vs ASD are different and I was aggravated because I don’t wear the SLP hat :( special needs parents wear so many hats.

we are in speech therapy and occupational therapy since 14-15 months. eci eval next week. my 20 month old would try to say the word but it’s always the first letter sound of that word. like example for toothbrush, he’ll say Tttu. car=ca, hat=ha, eat=eee. is this apraxia?

My daughter didn’t say much until about 2.5 years old when she started preschool & learned English. I only speak Spanish to her at home. She’s a great talker now. My son is 20 months old and only says “mama”. He starts speech next week and I’m a mess. I’m an SLP & it feels so different when you’re the parent and want to diagnose them with a million things! :( I’m hoping he’s also just a little delay. I know we are taught language shouldn’t matter but I 100% believe Spanish is hard than English.

How do you know which is which. My son is 2.5 and has basically zero words. He does access some words sometimes like when he is very upset. I have a feeling it’s apraxia because he works so hard to get the word out . Like UP he will say bubp or uuuhhh bbaaa and like really trying to get the P or B out and mama has never been mama it was like mmmm uuuuuhhm

So how would you know what it is when they haven’t started talking? How can you know if it’s apraxia or late talking? If they make the same sound for animal noises each time (even if inaccurate), would this point more towards late talker than apraxia?

How do you tell the difference when you also have hearing loss but won’t wear their hearing aids? My son is 3 he has bilateral hearing loss and has some receptive language and is in speech and is babbling some sounds but no real words other than Mama sometimes.

This was so helpful! Thank you!!! My 3.5 yr old has had 2 autism evals and they are only labeling him as “global developmental delay”. He was a late walker and is still not fulling talking. We are making strides with school and daycare as well as ST and OT. Apraxia (the way you explained it) is what it sounds like he has. He’s verbal, you just can’t understand a lot of what he says. It’s like his brain is working faster than what he can actually get out

My son is who is in the spectrum just got diagnosed with echolalia by the psychologist but I think is apraxia. He is already having ST at home and school. His current SP can’t do an evaluation yet until next year for apraxia. How can I bring this up to the school SP? As they can do an evaluation at school for apraxia.

Why can my son , who has ASD dx, repeat words But then he loses it and doesn’t use it afterwards when I know he understands and has said the words prior. He is extremely smart. We have sat and done a puzzle- he states every single shape (one I don’t even know 😆), but cannot answer to me when I ask him questions in general? It’s all so hard to understand
