@yosemiteconservancy: Now, that’s a lot of compost! In 2015, the National Park Foundation, National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), and Subaru of America teamed up to launch the Zero Landfill Initiative (ZLI) to reduce waste in three national parks, including Yosemite! First, a 2015 waste audit of the park found that annually 684.8 tons of food waste were being sent to the local landfill, making up 32% of the park’s total annual landfill waste. So we thought of a way to shrink those numbers — compost! In 2021 Yosemite Conservancy took the lead on launching our composting program. Composting is a way to help organic material break down aerobically, without releasing methane, resulting in a nutrient-rich substance that can be used for farming, gardening and more. Pretty cool! Together with our park partners, we have been able to divert 1,000 TONS from the landfill!!
