@surryplace: What are some things you have in your home that turned out to be way more high maintenance than you realized? While I love the look of these, I spend way too much time on upkeep and cleaning. 1. Light colored floors: they show everything and within a few days of mopping they already feel dirty again. What to get instead: • Color variation: different shades will help conceal dirt and wear. You can still do light, just pick one with some medium tones • Smooth surface: while hand-scraped give it that authentic wood look, unfortunately it also creates a nice little crevice for dirt to settle • Gloss finish: this tends to exacerbate smears or cloudiness 2. Matte/flat finish paint. To clarify, this finish is a good choice for ceilings to minimize reflectiveness, but on walls, it is difficult to clean. What to get instead: • Eggshell or satin: this has just the slightest sheen but is much easier to wipe down • Semi-gloss: a step up in the gloss but good for bathroom or kitchens when you tend to get water droplets 3. Glass shower doors. The streak free or drop free coating doesn’t last and you end up with a hazy dirty film.
