Researchers found that certain LG TVs could collect information about devices on a home network and, if compromised, could potentially be used to capture audio even when the TV appears to be off. What happened: The investigation found that the tested TVs could identify devices connected to the same network, including phones, computers, printers, switches, and smart-home devices. Researchers also reported that the TVs collected nearby Wi-Fi network names, signal information, and device-related identifiers.  What that means:  Those TVs are basically doing a full inventory of your home network. Think of it like someone walking through your house, writing down every device they see, and then peeking out the windows to note your neighbors’ Wi-Fi names too. The researchers also demonstrated that a compromised TV could capture audio through its microphone, including when the television appeared to be off. They showed that audio could be stored while the TV was disconnected from the internet and retrieved once the connection was restored. Here’s how to protect yourself: * Review your TV’s privacy settings. Turn off voice recognition, microphone-related features, and any audio features you do not actively us * Segment your network. Put your TV on a separate Wi-Fi network or guest network so if it does get compromised, it can’t easily access your other connected devices like phones, laptops, or security cameras. * Keep firmware updated.
