@robertleebarber: A lot of career advice focuses on how to become more marketable. I think the more valuable question is whether you're becoming more recommendable. Because some of the most important career opportunities never begin with someone reading your resume. They begin with a conversation you're not in. “We need someone who can handle this.” “Who would you trust?” “Who could lead this?” “Who should we talk to?” And then somebody says a name. What makes your name come up in those rooms usually isn't a perfectly constructed resume. It's accumulated evidence from hundreds of ordinary interactions. You did what you said you would do. You handled pressure well. You were prepared. You owned mistakes. You made difficult situations better. You helped other people succeed without needing the credit. That's why reputation compounds in a way credentials often can't. Every project creates evidence. Every relationship creates an advocate or a skeptic. Every commitment either strengthens or weakens what people believe they can trust you with next. So here's a career question worth asking: If an opportunity came up tomorrow and I wasn't in the room, who would advocate for me, and what would they say? You can't control every opportunity that appears. But you can spend your career becoming the person people think of when one does. Don't just build a resume that gets you into the conversation. Build a reputation that starts conversations when you're not even in the room.

Please tell people how to build that into the hiring process. Else this feedback is useless.
