@a_k_375: During the 16th and 19th centuries, the Regency of Algiers or the kingdom of algers became one of the most powerful maritime states in the Mediterranean, ruling the seas with an iron hand, fire, and the fierce courage of its men. Its sailors became known to Europeans as the “Barbary Corsairs,” while in the Algerian context they were known as the Raïs. They attacked European ships and coastal settlements, capturing sailors and civilians and transporting many of the captives to the city of Algiers, where some were sold or put to work in various occupations, while wealthy and high-ranking captives were kept for ransom. Historian Robert Davis estimates that the number of Europeans captured and enslaved by the corsairs of Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli between approximately the 16th and 18th centuries reached between one million and 1.25 million people, although this estimate remains debated among historians. The power of Algiers was not limited to raids and booty; numerous European powers were compelled to conclude peace treaties and pay money and provide gifts in exchange for the protection of their ships and the security of their maritime trade. These included Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Venice, Tuscany, Sardinia, Hanover, Bremen, Sicily, and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The United States of America also entered into an agreement with Algiers that involved payments and supplies in exchange for peace and the protection of American commerce.
