Are you talking about Al Gore. Al Gore actually didn't really serve in Vietnam but rather was a combat photographer who took along with him a bodyguard. Al served roughly 6 months?

eventually they changed the draft to a lottery system and I drew the number five which meant I would be drafted very quickly. because I had my case under appeal and they could not draft me until it was no longer on appeal. then they suspended the draft for 3 months. I withdrew my appeal and let my status as a 1A draft eligible individual just lapse while there was no draft. that put me at the back of the line and I was never drafted and I never went to Vietnam. I was completely and utterly undeserving of this grace. 50 years later I am sucking up social security and living a comfortable life in good health. others who did have to go are rotting in the ground. it seemed unfair then. it seems unfair now. the Vietnam war era draft was a joke played on poor people. I was white and middle class.

Yes I’m aware. I served in the Army starting in 1965. I volunteered to serve in Vietnam with the 101st ABN. I was 21 and invincible I thought. After 2 tours and a few minor wounds I made it. I still wonder why I made it and so many others (58,3260) didn’t. I think about all the great Men and Woman who paid the ultimate price and sometimes wish I were with them. We fought for each other and counted on each other. My biggest fear was to fail by Buddies. [Fire]🇺🇸

I grew up in a working class neighborhood, after a few neighborhood boys were lost over there, the parents started to change their feelings about sending a son to the army, and looking for a way out became respectable

i was 18 in 1977 and when my best friend's brother came home from Vietnam, he was not right, and in spite of a loving wife and family he took his own life

I remember neighborhood kids going to Vietnam and the families going to funerals and coming home with a flag. I couldn't wrap my head around it as a youngster.

I was a drug addled college student who wasted his time at University from 1969 to 1973. my performance was so poor that they tried to take my deferment away.
