I'm going to honestly say nta because op did say something ahead of time and I feel like if the Sun had an issue he should have said something right there and then. it kind of doesn't seem fair to anyone involved to actively choose to get mad later down the line

ESH. OP is the AH for leaving before the dinner and cake. DIL is the AH for bombarding him with insults. She could have made her point and end it. Wife is the AH for giving in. Son is the AH for not making it clear how upset he would be (though he's probably given up as this is probably normal behavior for OP)

YTAH. No doubt the son had to live with an overbearing and unloving father all his life. The wife caved as no doubt she has lived under the father's thumb her whole life and can't do anything herself anymore. The son didn't really miss the father really but missed the father he wishes he had, one who loved him enough not to even think of leaving let alone say it out loud and actually leave. And he missed his mom who probably wanted to be there (hemmed and hawed) but after living with the father so long is probably so demoralized she has no confidence left. Good on the new wife. Son has found his ride or die. Best to forget the father altogether. He is no dad.

why should he have to be uncomfortable because his kid wanted a big wedding and he didn't force the mother she didn't want to drive so she left with him
