And a good spouse can absolutely be a source of support, encouragement, and companionship through that growth. But there is a difference between supporting someone who is already taking responsibility for himself and being handed a man with the expectation that marriage will transform him. We have normalised giving our daughters responsibilities they were never supposed to carry. A woman can be patient with her husband. She can support him through difficulty. She can encourage him to do better. But his character, his repentance, his discipline, and his decision to change and drop certain bad habits ultimately belong to him. Marriage is a partnership, not a rehabilitation programme. So when we tell a woman, “He just needs a good wife,” we should also ask ourselves why the responsibility for his transformation has been placed on her in the first place. A good woman can walk alongside a man who is growing. A good woman can be a beautiful influence in a man’s life.
