But here's the question: Why wait until after the election? Republicans already control the White House, the House of Representatives, and the Senate. If Trump believes the federal government can afford to give American adults $5,000, his administration could ask the Republican-controlled Congress to introduce, fund, and pass that legislation right now. Instead, the $5,000 has been made conditional on what happens in November. And this isn't a small promise. Sending $5,000 to every adult American could cost roughly $1.2–$1.3 trillion. Trump also did not provide a detailed funding mechanism when he announced the proposal. There is another reason to be skeptical: Americans have heard similar proposals before. Trump previously supported the idea of $5,000 “DOGE dividend” checks and later discussed tariff-funded rebate checks. Those payments never materialized. That doesn't mean this new proposal couldn't eventually become law. It means the $5,000 currently being discussed is not an approved payment. It is a political promise that would still require action from Congress.
