The VA is a good example of why both are good and bad. You can get care for free, but there is nothing extra given out, providers don’t have much autonomy and are often not as good because the pay isn’t great.

Look the passing of the ACA created the cluster that we have today. This is why. France, Germany etc are the size of a single state. Additionally, in those Countries everybody pays, in the US 40+ percent of the population pays zero in federal taxes. Also Germany just revolted on taxes.
