@melissadorman: There's a 13th mortgage payment your bank hopes you never make. 🏦 Same payment, one more time a year, straight to principal. On the average $330,000 loan at 7% that's about six years off the loan and about $112,000 that stays in your pocket. Easiest way: get paid every two weeks, pay half your mortgage every two weeks. 26 halves is 13 payments. You never feel it. The bank feels all of it. I pay an extra nine dollars a month on my Principal. I know it’s not much but it adds up. It’s already cut my loan down by over a year.

I do an extra $20 a month to principle and it’s taken three years off. Soon I’ll bump it too $100 extra a month.

It’s freaking insane that we have ‘accepted’ having to pay more in interest than the total cost of the home initially… 😭

My mortgage company would not accept anything less than the require payment. I was trying to split it into 2 payments.

First time buyer here who knows little to nothing about mortgages. Are you allowed to increase your mortgage payment to about $5000 ($2500 mortgage and $2500 towards principal) a month instead of $2500? And will it help?

Jamie :
Just have to check ahead of time they allow it. Mine will hold a half payment until the full amount is there. So I pay the extra payment a year but broke it up over 12 months and make that extra payment to principal every month.

Make sure your bank allows that. They don’t always. If they don’t, you can make your payments mid month and it also helps.

Would this be even more beneficial if I did weekly payments? We get paid on a weekly basis, so we could essentially pay $925 a week. Or would it just be smart to do $1850 every two weeks?
