@.slightlyorganized: I started making this post as a joke. I finished Kin today, encountered yet another fictional brothel, and thought, Wait. Why does this keep happening? So I started counting. I got to seven alarmingly quickly. And these are only the ones I remembered. I have absolutely no confidence this is a complete inventory of the fictional brothels I have visited. Then I remembered Butterfly, which I read in high school in the ’90s. And yes—the entire premise is a brothel for women. So this is clearly not a recent development. (An aside for my spicy readers: If you’ve never heard of Butterfly, you may want to investigate. I feel like some of you have been sleeping on this one for 30+ years.) But somewhere in the middle of making this very unserious post, I started wondering if there’s actually a reason these books keep finding their way onto my shelves. Because maybe it isn’t the brothels. These books use those spaces in very different ways. Sometimes they’re places of refuge or unexpected community. Sometimes they expose vulnerability, exploitation, or the ways money and power shape people’s choices. Sometimes they complicate the difference between being considered “respectable” and actually being good. And sometimes they create a space where characters can live parts of themselves that don’t fit comfortably into the lives society expects them to have. Which, now that I think about it, sounds a lot like the kinds of stories I’m drawn to anyway: found family, survival, power, class, complicated women, morally gray characters, and people living at the margins of “respectable” society. So maybe I don’t have a thing for books with brothels. Maybe I have a thing for books that ask who gets to be considered respectable—and who gets left outside. Although, based on the evidence, the brothels certainly aren’t hurting. Now I need to know: What weirdly specific thing keeps showing up in YOUR favorite books?
