Wow. This landed on the wrong side of tiktok. It seems to me this whole conversation was really about her not being ready YET. Some children are strong willing and think they know everything and have to learn things for themselves... like me... I was the strong willed I know everything child. There was no talking sense into me. These are VERY basic things so if she is not ready to try to do some problem solving for herself, she is not ready to move out. I was so determined to leave, I would have never asked these things. I would have figured it out.

Instead of embracing her independence sounds like you’re making her feel shameful for wanting to be independent.

I will never understand grown adult parents bringing their dirty laundry about their children onto a public forum.

I think the flip side to this argument is that if she’s almost 18 and you haven’t taught her these things, that’s a YOU problem as a parent.

sorry to tell you this, but the reason shes doing that is specifically to get away from YOU. trust me I know from experience leaving my own parents.

When I was 16 I decided that I would go to live in Paris for a year before college. My mom said ok, but don't ask me for money and don't ask for my help. And then I figured it out and gathered the money selling makeup at my high school, and traveled to my country's capital to get that visa. It was difficult but I did it MYSELF and it was a GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCE

This is the Gen X parenting we need. The sarcasm and slightly petty realness 😂

sounds like you're punishing her for how YOU raised her instead of helping make sure she's safe and capable of being independent. Very disrespectful and disappointing actions from a parent.

Adults help other adults. And isn’t your job to help prepare her for adulthood? Why are you punishing her for not staying with you?
