I had to have emergency aortic valve replacement. I had a defective congenital aortic valve that was severely damaged from chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. Im now mechanical.

My mom had 4 open heart surgeries, three mitral valve and one aortic valve replacement. Her first surgery was way back in 1979, her last in 1994. Medicine has advanced a great deal since then, so I am very confident that you will be just fine. You’ll be in excellent hands at the Cleveland Clinic. One piece of advice - waking from such deep anesthesia can be scary. Sometimes you’re awake while the paralytic is still active and you’re still intubated. It gives some the feeling that they are not breathing because the vent is breathing for them. My mom said she wished someone had told her before her first surgery, because after having this experience the first time, she knew what it was for the following 3, and was much more able to relax and not panic. You’ll do great!

I’ve had that surgery. Actually, I had to have a full Bentall procedure, including valve replacement. My sister died from aortic dissection, my doctor caught the genetic component and sent me for a “just in case” ultrasound of my heart. With no symptoms, my aneurysm was large enough to indicate surgery.
