Patagonia represents the challenge at the land, energy and infrastructure level. Different countries. Different companies. Different technologies. Same optimization problem: How do we turn limited physical resources into more intelligence? If one layer cannot scale fast enough, pressure moves somewhere else. Sometimes we remove the bottleneck. Sometimes we substitute around it. Sometimes we redesign the architecture. Sometimes capital moves to another part of the stack. And sometimes we move the entire data center to another part of the world. AI may feel digital. But scaling intelligence is increasingly a negotiation with the physical world. The laws of physics don’t care how impressive our benchmarks are. Electricity still has to be generated. Chips still have to be manufactured. Data still has to move. Buildings still have to be built. So perhaps the next phase of AI won’t simply be about making intelligence smarter. It will be about how successfully the entire system can negotiate with its constraints.
