I’m getting really sick and tired of seeing people treat African hairstyles like a costume or a trend. Braids, cornrows, locs, and protective hairstyles have deep cultural significance in Black communities. They have a history that goes far beyond fashion, and that history deserves respect. What bothers me is seeing people adopt these hairstyles without understanding where they come from, while Black people have faced discrimination for wearing those same hairstyles. There is a difference between appreciating a culture and treating it like an aesthetic. And yes, this goes both ways. Cultural appreciation should come with understanding, respect, and accountability. Nobody needs to pretend to be another race to appreciate a hairstyle. Wear your hair how you want, but take the time to learn the history behind it. That’s all I’m saying.
