Our 5yr and 3yr old still sleep in our room. Yes BOTH of them. 😂 And years ago, I would have thought this was terrible, terrible parenting. Why? Because I was told: “Don’t pick them every time they cry.” “They’ll become clingy.” “They need to self-soothe.” “They must learn independence.” Hagh! the older I get, the more I ask: Mmmm… who taught us that needing comfort is a problem? Cause when I look at the history, some of those ideas came from experts like Dr Luther Emmett Holt, who promoted very strict infant routines, and psychologist John B. Watson, who even warned parents against giving children too much affection. Imagine!!! And sadly, generation later we are still hearing echoes of such ideas… “Stop carrying that baby.” “You’re spoiling her.” “He’s too attached.” “She needs to toughen up.” Eh! Meanwhile, I look at our cat Ritah lying there majestically with her kittens all over her. 😂 They sleep beside her. They run off and explore. Then they come right back. And nobody is shouting: “Madam, those kittens need independence!” 😂😂😂 I know, I know…we are not cats. But really… Are we the only mammals who somehow convinced ourselves that a small child needing closeness is a problem? Maybe independence does not mean: “I don’t need you.” Maybe it means: “I know you are there, so I am brave enough to go.” Because here is the part that really gets me: How many of us, even as adults, can freely run to our own parents and say: “Mummy, I am scared.” “Daddy, I am struggling.” “I need you.” Without feeling weak or embarrassed? I don’t know when my children will leave our bed. But I know this: At 5, 15, 25 or 45… I want them to know they can always come home. Now tell me… Do you think we sometimes push children to be independent before they are emotionally ready? #letstalk #parents #sleeping #attachment
