Reads as lack of curiosity to me and gives me zero incentive to share anything. Being asked questions makes me feel like the person is genuinely interested in my life. Because thats also my reason for asking questions - i genuinely wanna know and i dont want to make incorrect assumptions and conclusions about you or fill in gaps based on my own limited life experience. People are very complex. This is all done within context of course and isn’t supposed to be jarring. Its a balance of both and there is a fine line.

I don’t talk to people who don’t ask questions. It shows a lack of mutual curiosity and social skills. It sounds cool in theory, but it only works in short term relationships. If you never ask a friend or partner questions you will never have a full relationship. I legitimately have broken up with people for never asking me question. This is a lot of philosophy speak to explain a lack of empathy.

If I met someone and they didn’t ask me a single question about myself I’d never talk to them again. It demonstrates interest, curiosity, and an openness to learn. If I wanted to have a conversation where I wasn’t asked any questions I’d just go on a date with a man.

I wish more people understood this. I hate people asking questions to try to get to know me. People tend to do it at random times when it feels akward and forced. It’s not always about what’s important to the person it’s sometimes a matter of do they care to share that info with you in particular. Getting to know someone should be organic and not feel like an interview.

when I ask a bunch of questions, I feel like I am interviewing them and vice versa. when I am getting to know someone, I am the same as the person you've mentioned. I also warn people like "please don't think I'm not interested, I just learn by gleaning."

I think this can come across as very self centered. Like you are monologue about yourself. If you didn’t ask a question or solicit feedback, I would not necessarily offer info up because it seems like you want me to take in your monologue

this is really difficult for me. if people don't ask me questions, I assume they don't want to know anything about me. I'm not about to just start volunteering information about myself that they might not care about or find interesting. 😥

I don’t agree with this because most ppl don’t share or feel comfortable sharing unless they are asked esp in the early part of building a relationship. Everyone isn’t an extrovert.

Eh, im not in this camp. I flat out ask people specific information I want to know and I also don’t necessarily volunteer information about myself. there’s never going to be a one-size-fits-all approach to human interaction. To me, this methodology feels lazy and can show a lack of interest. I value being an active participant in getting to know someone, if that’s truly the goal, rather than passively receiving information

This may be a generalization but this is a very neurodivergent way to communicate. ideally there's a balance of both, but I'm very much a "following threads" or prompting sort of communicator rather than someone who asks direct questions. giving someone the opportunity to share experiences and practice active listening to encourage them down paths instead of interviewing them feels more natural. and yea, this does sometimes mean basic life details get missed sometimes but it also opens A LOT of opportunities to get a sense someone's interiority, values, perspectives, and interests. Then if I do ask questions it's more about following up on some detail they mentioned before rather than digging for new information. It really matters to me when someone remembers some little thing I said I was doing or mattered to me so I try to reciprocate that consideration for others.

I mean, I get it….AND if someone’s only talking about themselves and not presenting curiosity about me, I am eventually going to assume that they don’t want to know.

I think there’s a balance. Sure, I don’t like conversations that feel like an interview but there’s a way to ask questions that express curiosity or show that you want to get deeper into someone’s thoughts/feelings without being invasive. These comments have really surprised me tbh.

When somebody only talks about themselves, I just tend to sit and listen because it doesn’t seem like they care at all to know anything about me. I tend to lockdown rather than offer up something that this speaker will inevitably make about themselves

This is also how my brain works! I hate when it’s just question back and forth. Like, tell me why you woke up today and how you were feeling if we’re talking about sleep! I want to CONNECT. Not identify personal preferences. Let’s learn your favorite movie and color a different day. And, candidly, I often learn the placement someone is in their family pretty instantly if it’s something they think about often

I do this and I’m autistic. I think some people vibe with this and others think you are self-centered.

Not being asked direct get to know you questions would fast track someone to friend status in my world. I love this.

Asking questions feels like an interview and conversation becomes stagnant and awkward. Story telling is how I like to connect with people and I will prompt and ask some questions, but I have been in AWKWARD conversations where someone says “what do you like to do for fun?” I HATE. But if I say “last weekend I went berry picking with my roommate and the funniest thing happened bc I didn’t know the different between a black berry and Marion berry. Did you know they’re different? You’re from here I’m sure you know….” And it feels more natural.

just cut a friendship over this, eventually you become an echo chamber or a therapist. a mix and balanced of questions and sharing what they want is the key

I’d like to see how this sounds in conversation . I can’t see a world where you meet someone for the first time and questions aren’t being asked.
