@_dove99: Three months after their first-class flight, Jan had learned several things about dating JingJing. JingJing scheduled everything…absolutely everything. Dinner reservations went into her calendar. Dates went into her calendar. Once, Jan had caught her adding Stay at Jan's apartment to her calendar. She had never taken public transport until Jan made her. And despite running an international company with thousands of employees, JingJing could become surprisingly dramatic when faced with minor inconveniences. Which was why Jan laughed when JingJing asked to come camping with her. She actually laughed. JingJing stared at her across the restaurant table. “Why are you laughing?” “Sorry.” “You don't look sorry.” Jan tried to stop but it didn't work. JingJing's eyes narrowed. “You said you go every year.” “I do.” “And you're going next weekend.” “Yes.” “So I want to come.” Jan finally got herself under control. “Jing, I don't think camping is something you’d like.” “How do you know?” “Because last weekend you complained that my shower pressure was unacceptable.” “It was unacceptable.” Jan grinned and JingJing folded her arms. “I want to experience normal camping.” Something about the proud way she announced it almost started Jan laughing again. “Normal camping?” “Yes.” “You know I mean an actual tent, right?” “Obviously.” “On the ground.” “I know how camping works, Jan.” She huffed with an eye roll. “No hotel nearby.” “I don't need a hotel.” “No room service.” “I don't need room service.” “No private bathroom.” JingJing hesitated and Jan saw it. “There it is.” “I can survive without a private bathroom for two days.” “Okay.” JingJing blinked. “Okay?” “Come with me.” A victorious smile appeared. “Thank you.” Jan pointed at her. “But I'm not listening to you complain.” “I won't complain.” “Promise?” “Promise.” Jan smiled knowing full well this was going to be a disaster. . And it was. They left Bangkok early Saturday morning and drove northeast for a couple of hours, gradually exchanging traffic and buildings for open roads, green hills and countryside. JingJing spent most of the drive excited. When they finally reached the campsite, JingJing stepped out of the car and looked around. Trees surrounded them and mountains rose in the distance Their campsite sat beside a quiet stretch of water with only a handful of other tents scattered nearby. JingJing smiled. “This is beautiful.” Jan took the tent from the car. “Told you.” “And quiet.” “Did you turn your phone off?” JingJing looked horrified. “Don't be ridiculous.” Jan laughed and they carried everything to their spot. Twenty minutes later, JingJing stood with her hands on her hips, staring at it. “Where does the air-conditioning go?” Jan slowly looked up. “What?” “The air-conditioning.” Jan stared at her and JingJing stared back. “Is there no air-conditioning?” Jan dropped the tent pole. “Get in the car.” “What?” “I'm taking you home.” “Jan!” “We're twenty minutes in!” “I was only asking!” “It's a tent!” “It's Thailand!” “Yes, JingJing. I am aware.” “It's hot.” “That's why I told you this might not be your thing.” She sighed, reaching for the tent poles to pack away. JingJing grabbed the tent pole before Jan could reach it. “I'm staying.” “Give me that.” “No.” “You don't even know where it goes.” “I'll figure it out.” Ten minutes later, JingJing had somehow attached it completely backwards. “Stop laughing at me.” “I can't.” Jan giggled from her spot on the grass. “You're supposed to be helping.” “You said you'd figure it out.” JingJing glared at the pole. “Your tent is unnecessarily complicated.” “My tent cost one thousand baht.” “That explains it.” Jan gasped. “Don't insult my tent.” “I'm not insulting it.” “You absolutely are.” Jan placed down her beer and stood up, walking towards Jing. JingJing looked at the half-collapsed tent. “I think it's insulting itself.” Jan tackled her and JingJing shrieked as they both fell onto the grass. FINAL 5️⃣ Jan's smile disappeared. “No.”
“You haven't heard them.”
“Doesn’t matter, still no.”
“A larger tent.”
“My tent’s fine.” Jan huffed.
“A proper mattress.”
“That’s what sleeping bags are for.”
“Portable fan.”
“Maybe.”
“Portable shower.”
“Absolutely not.”
“I found one online.”
“What. When?"
“This morning.” Jing grinned holding up her phone.
Jan grabbed JingJing's phone. “Give me that!”
“Hey!”
“You're ruining camping!”
“I'm improving camping!”
Jan held the phone out of reach while JingJing climbed half on top of her trying to retrieve it.
“You wanted normal camping!”
“I experienced normal camping. Now we can make it better.”
“You're impossible.”
“Please, baby.” Jing brought out the big guns and started pouting. “I’m doing my best.”
That made Jan freeze. Three months ago, Jan had met a woman on a first-class flight with the most expensive outfit she’d ever seen and not one hair out of place.
Now JingJing was sitting beside her in the middle of nowhere, hair a mess, wearing yesterday's clothes, talking about future camping endeavours.
Jan handed the phone back and JingJing smiled triumphantly. “Thank you.”
“No luxury tent.”
“We'll discuss it.”
“No.”
“Next year's a long way away.”
Jan just laughed and kissed her.
JingJing rested her head against Jan's shoulder. “Can we stop at a hotel on the way home? I’m in desperate need of a shower.”
Jan immediately pushed her away. “Get lost.”
JingJing's laughter echoed across the campsite.

PART 3️⃣ Darkness changed everything. The heat faded just slightly and the campsite became quiet except for insects, distant voices and the soft movement of water.
They sat outside their tent beneath a sky JingJing rarely saw in Bangkok.
Jan looked over and found her staring upwards. “Pretty?”
JingJing nodded. “Very.”
Jan smiled and JingJing rested her head against Jan's shoulder. “I understand why you do this now.”
“Really?”
“Don't look so surprised.”
“You asked where the air-conditioning went.”
“That was hours ago. I've grown.”
“Your personal development has been incredible.” JingJing pinched her thigh. “Ow!”
“Be nice to your girlfriend.”
Jan turned her head and kissed her, JingJing smiling against her lips.
It started soft, but JingJing's hand slid around the back of Jan's neck and Jan shifted closer. When they separated, Jan looked towards the tent.
JingJing followed her gaze, then looked back at her. “No.”
Jan laughed. “I didn't say anything.”
“I know exactly what you're thinking.”
“We have a perfectly good tent.”
“We also have neighbours.”
“They're quite far away.”
“Jan.”
“Fine.” Jan threw out a pout that had JingJing quickly kissing it away.
.
At two in the morning, Jan woke to someone poking her constantly in the shoulder.
“Jan.”
Nothing.
“Jan.”
Another poke.
“Janhae.”
Jan groaned. “What?”
“I heard something.” JingJing whispered right up against her cheek.
Jan opened one eye. “What?”
“Outside.”
“It's a campsite.”
“There was a noise.”
“Probably an animal.”
JingJing went completely still. “An animal?”
Jan realised her mistake. “A tiny animal.”
“What kind?”
“I don't know.”
Another noise came from somewhere outside had JingJing immediately moved closer.
Jan smiled in the darkness. “Are you scared?”
“No.”
“You're practically lying on top of me.”
“The ground slopes this way.”
“It absolutely doesn't.”
“Go back to sleep.”
Jan wrapped an arm around her and JingJing settled against her chest.
Five minutes passed before… ”Jan?”
“What?”
“I'm hot.”
“Turn on the air-conditioning.”
JingJing elbowed her.

PART 2️⃣ Dinner was cooked over a tiny camping stove.
JingJing stared suspiciously at the pot. “Is it meant to look like that?”
“Yes.”
“Are you sure?”
“No.”
“Jan.”
“It'll be fine.” Jan laughed.
“That's not reassuring.”
“You ate street food from a woman cooking beside a motorway with me last month.”
“That was different.”
“How?”
“She looked like she knew what she was doing.”
Jan placed a hand against her chest. “That's hurtful.”
Twenty minutes later, they ate slightly mushy noodles and burnt chicken while sitting beside the water.
JingJing took one bite and Jan watched her.
“Well?”
JingJing chewed. “It's…”
“Careful.”
“…food.”
Jan burst out laughing. “You’re such a snob.”
“I'm eating it!”
“Because you're hungry.”
“That's generally why people eat.”
Jan leaned over and kissed her cheek and JingJing immediately stole the least burned portion from Jan's bowl.
“Hey!”
“Normal camping.”
“That's not what that means!”

PART 4️⃣ The next morning, Jan woke alone and for one second she wondered whether JingJing had finally given up and booked herself a hotel.
Then she crawled from the tent and found JingJing sitting outside with two cups of coffee.
Jan stopped. “Where did you get coffee?”
“I made it.”
“You?”
JingJing looked offended. “I can make coffee.”
“Yesterday you couldn't operate a tent pole.”
“Completely unrelated skill.”
Jan sat beside her, accepted the cup and took a cautious sip. It was actually good. “Huh.”
“Don't sound so surprised.”
Jan laughed and leaned against her.
Morning mist still hung over the distant hills and the campsite was beginning to wake around them.
JingJing slipped an arm around Jan's shoulders. “So, I've been thinking.”
“Oh?”
“I want to come next year.”
Jan turned to her. “Seriously?”
“Yes.”
“Even without air-conditioning?”
“I survived.”
“One night.”
“Still counts.”
Jan smiled. “Okay.”
JingJing took another sip of coffee. “But I have some suggestions.”

PART 1️⃣ Once Jan rescued the tent from JingJing, things improved.
Slightly.
JingJing discovered the toilet situation twenty minutes later and she returned looking personally betrayed. “Jan.”
Jan was arranging their sleeping bags. “No.”
“You don't even know what I'm going to say.”
“Whatever it is, no.”
“There is a lizard in the bathroom.”
“I think the bathroom is for everyone.”
“It looked at me.”
“And you looked at her.”
“I'm serious.”
“So am I. Give her some privacy, pervert.”
JingJing stood at the entrance of the tent. “I hate you.”
Jan smiled sweetly. “Normal camping.”
JingJing threw the pack of wipes at her.
.
By late afternoon, they'd gone walking along one of the nearby trails.
This, at least, JingJing loved.
Jan watched her stop every few minutes to take photographs. Flowers. The mountains and a particularly large butterfly.
“Jan.” JingJing tuts. “Stop taking pictures of me.”
Jan didn’t lower her phone. “No.”
“I'm sweaty.”
“You're cute.”
“My hair is stuck to my forehead.”
“Still cute.” Jan laughed holding out her hand and JingJing caught her hand, the pair continuing on their walk.
Three months together, sometimes it felt longer. Their first date after the flight had turned into a second. Then a third. They were still completely different and somehow it seemed to work perfectly.
They reached a viewpoint near the top of the trail and stopped. Looking at the green hills stretching out all around them.
JingJing became quiet and Jan glanced over. “Worth losing the air-conditioning?”
JingJing considered it. “Ask me after tonight.”
Jan laughed.
