No matter how you spin it, almost anything can be framed as being “rooted in men” if you make men’s perception the basis for a woman’s choices. Some people argue that the concept of modesty sexualises the female body because it places emphasis on covering it. But you could equally argue that exposure can be sexualised too. Look at how advertising has historically paired the female body with sex, or how the way a woman dresses is still used by some people to sexualise, objectify or even excuse the mistreatment of her. But surely the core issue is the gaze of the person doing the sexualising. A woman’s clothing cannot be responsible for another person’s inability to regulate their gaze. You can change the clothing, the age, the circumstances, even whether the person is human or not, and someone with a deeply distorted gaze can still sexualise what they see. So why does the conversation so often remain centred around what women should or shouldn’t wear, when the underlying issue is the person choosing to sexualise them? A woman choosing modesty does not automatically mean she believes her body is inherently sexual or that she is dressing for men. And a woman choosing less coverage does not automatically mean she is inviting sexualisation either.
