I stopped at a gas station at 2:13 in the morning. I was driving home from a road trip and had about twenty minutes left before I got home. I was exhausted, almost out of gas, and the next town wasn’t for another fifteen miles. So when I saw a gas station glowing in the middle of nowhere, I pulled in. There were no other cars. Not one. I parked next to the pump and went inside. The cashier was an older man sitting behind the counter. He didn’t say anything. I grabbed a drink and walked up to pay. He looked at me for a few seconds and then said, “You’re going to want to leave before the cameras turn on.” I thought he was joking. I laughed. He didn’t. I paid and walked back outside. As I started pumping gas, I noticed a security camera above the entrance. Then another one on the corner of the building. I looked at the small monitor inside the store through the window. The cameras were showing the parking lot. Except there was something strange. On the monitor, I could see myself standing beside my car. But there was someone standing behind me. I immediately turned around. Nobody was there. I looked back at the monitor. The person was still there. Except now they were closer. I stopped pumping. I looked behind me again. Nothing. Then the gas station lights flickered. The cashier suddenly locked the front door. I ran toward it. He shook his head. “Don’t.” I asked him what was happening. He pointed toward the security monitor. The person behind me was now standing directly beside my car. I looked outside. Still nothing. Then the monitor changed. It showed the inside of the gas station. The camera was pointed directly at me. Except on the screen… I wasn’t standing where I actually was. The screen showed me standing at the end of one of the aisles. Facing the camera. Smiling. I looked down the aisle. There was nobody there. Then the cashier whispered, “Don’t look at the front window.” Of course, I did. There was someone standing outside. Right next to my car. They were staring at me through the glass. It looked exactly like me. Same clothes. Same hair. Same face. I backed away from the window. The thing outside smiled. Then it raised its hand and waved. The cashier grabbed my arm. “Back door. Now.” We ran into the storage room and out the back. I didn’t even stop to ask questions. I got into my car and drove away. I didn’t look back. The next morning, I searched for the gas station. It didn’t exist. I checked the address from my receipt. There was an empty field there. No building. No gas station. Nothing. But the weirdest part was the receipt. It showed that I had purchased a drink and 17 gallons of gas. My car only has a 14-gallon tank. And underneath the total, there was a message printed on the receipt: “THANK YOU FOR STOPPING.” I still have that receipt. And every few months, I get a notification from my phone asking if I want to leave a review for that gas station.
