I was scheduled to fly twice that day from Sacramento to Austin to Charlotte on Southwest Airlines boarding time 1:20 PM Sacramento Tuesday. I still have the unused boarding pass.

I was in O’Hare in line to board a plane when they asked us to all return to our seats for a delay. We waited, not knowing what was happening for about 20 minutes when suddenly we saw pilots and flight attendant, walking down the terminal, holding each other crying and a few minutes later they turned off all the TVs in the airport. They didn’t want people to panic and rush the exits I guess. I was there when they evacuated the airport and you could hear a pin drop as people were leaving. I also was on a flight the first day that they allowed commercial flights to resume and that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Again, total silence in the airport, national guardsman with machine guns and rifles, stationed everywhere with dogs, and about half my flight was quietly just solving the entire plane ride to our destination. I still can’t fly without having massive anxiety. that day changed the course of life for everyone.

I flew CLT-LGA on 9/8, scheduled to return on 9/11 on US Airways. My birthday trip to NYC lasted longer than expected. Was able to return to CLT on 9/15 via AMTRAK.

My first trip back was that Friday night. I remember walking up to my gate and all of the passengers started clapping. 😭

Remember youngins, most people did not have cell phones in 2001. And planes had no tvs or connectivity. Anyone on those planes that were landing were clueless unless the pilot said something or they happened to have the luxury of a skyphone in the seat back. There were people landing in Canada that had no clue until the wheels touched down.

Driving past the airport back home, you could see planes landing one after another; I had never seen so many lining up to land 🥺

I was flying FLL-DFW with connection to COS. I thought it strange they asked thru passengers to deplane too. I heard rumors of a bomb scare. I saw a group of people gathered at the outside of a restaurant. I thought, dang, that must be a pretty good restaurant to have all those people crowded around. People were trying to watch the TV in there. I was in a hotel in Dallas for three days. Flying back to COS was surreal. It still feels surreal.
