@russellruffino: A reporter asked Elon Musk how he's so fearless. He told her she had it backwards. Said he feels fear more than most people do. That he's afraid most of the time. So she asked how he does any of it. One word. Fatalism. By his own estimate SpaceX had a two or three percent chance of working. Ninety seven percent chance it ended in nothing. He looked straight at that and decided he could live with it. Said something being unlikely to work doesn't make it not worth doing. I've thought about that for years. Because the thing you're avoiding right now has a number on it too. You've just never said it out loud. You've been calling it timing. Research. Waiting until the new year. What's actually happening is that you're waiting for the odds to improve while you watch them. Odds have never once improved while somebody watched them. They move when you start and find out what's true. He didn't need ninety percent to go. He needed to know he could survive the ninety seven. So what's your number, and what actually happens to you in the failure case?
