Both of my parents came to this country and earned their U.S. citizenship, and all of us were born here. My sisters are nurses, and my brother and I served more than 12 years in the United States Marine Corps, including multiple combat tours. I love being an American, and I’m proud of the sacrifices we made to defend this country. At the same time, my parents made sure we never lost our Mexican heritage, and that culture, family, and traditions are just as much a part of me. Sometimes it feels like we’re not Mexican enough for people in Mexico, but not American enough for some people here. I’ve sacrificed for this country in ways many critics never have, but I don’t believe that makes me more valuable than anyone else, it simply means I’ve made sacrifices I wish more people understood. I don’t have to choose between Mexico and America. I’m Mexican-American, and my heritage doesn’t make me less American any more than my patriotism makes me less Mexican. Both are part of who I am, and I’m proud of both.
