a couple things: 1) Wicked has extremely deep pockets to weather more bad weeks than most other shows and 2) the owners of the Gershwin will be hard pressed to find another show to sell out the largest theater on Broadway. I think we’re okay for now!!!

do you think the lowering in numbers for wicked on broadway has anything to do with the movies? Like, people can now sit at home and watch the musical any time they want now, instead of spending $100+ to see it. I get it’s a different experience, but less and less people are seeming to care about theatre experiences nowadays.

Hopefully Mamdani's theatre membership fund lottery thing might include Wicked next year and could help cover costs while also giving young people the opportunity to see Wicked that may not have previously had the means or money to!

A lot of shows are closing early too. Moulin Rouge just closed, Heathers announced it’s closing early as did Six

There’s a major issue in Broadway and theater as a whole as well. Producers don’t want to back material that isn’t IP or pre-existing material, which means that a bunch of underwhelming productions are coming and going verrrry quickly (Beaches, Redwood, Queen of Versailles, etc.) which both depresses attendance and actual new original work from being given a chance. Also SNAPS for calling out the international tourism deficit which is a problem created ENTIRELY by the administration.

Unfortunately so many shows are doing bad. I’m nervous for my favorite show honestly. I hope my fav show and wicked last, they are my two comforts

Personally I think everyone is chicken little with this. We’ve seen numbers like this with Wicked before, even as recently as 2022 (recent enough to be very comparable in terms of running costs and overall trends). It just seems dramatically low because the hype of the movies caused some very high highs over the last few years (which should also mean they have good reserves to weather these ebbs!)

Wicked also made A TON of money the past two years while the films were coming out so they have money in the bank. The Gershwin theater also doesn’t want to let go of a long running show like wicked so they can take a chance on a new show that may not even last a few months. Due to its legacy and past financial success it has a much greater chance to find success again than most shows. If anything can change ✨for good✨ it’s Wicked

I think it says less about Wicked and more about the state of Broadway. So many shows are closing

International tourism would absolutely play a huge part in this… if we can opt for travel in countries that are safe, we will always choose that. As someone who flew from Australia to the US just for Broadway years ago (11 shows in 8 days), I would never risk it today.

If more Broadway Shows did a pro shot and made it available to stream - they’d make a fortune easily. It’s expensive to travel to Broadway but I’f happily pay to stream it! They released the recording of Six in movie theatres but its so expensive for movie theatres!

And to be quite honest, the people crying, “Wicked fatigue” have never even seen the show on Broadway and weren’t planning to anyway. I wasn’t worried about that being a factor at all.

I think it's primarily an after effect of the movies more than anything. Because we're not seeing this extreme of a downturn with any other equally tourist driven long runner comparable to Wicked (Lion King, Hamilton).

Since we're on the topic im curious, if wicked did ever close (hopefully not any time soon) where would all the left over props and costuming goes? do they get thrown out or repurposed/sold out (im not familiar with Broadway shows so im not sure what's the common practice?)
