I’m hearing (also fluent and an ASL terp) and the fact that some hearing people have the audacity to act like they know better than native Deaf signers bothers me to no end 😂 it also bothers me that other hearing people who know nothing about sign language take this kinda crap as fact just because it “looks cool.” Like what. Most of the time it’s gibberish 😩

i know this is kind of an irrelevant question to the video, but i noticed it heavily in this one and wanted to point it out—do you sign certain things with both hands that wouldn’t necessarily require it to make an emphasis? for example: “not it.” i’ve only ever learned those one-handed and don’t want to assume anything!

😂 Yes, the excuse is “regional sign,” and yet how these folks think Deaf ASL users wouldn’t recognize regional signs like hearing folks do a Southern accent surprises me.

Exactly, people have accents when they speak. Texas is different than Colorado. But generally it’s all English so we know what each other is saying. We need to be validating what deaf people are telling us about their experiences. Thanks for sharing and bringing awareness. ❤️

Everyone uses that as an excuse to sign badly on social media and it’s so frustrating. In Arizona we sign Chicken as a claw:3 by the mouth. We also have a sign for Javelina and saguaro that other people may not know because it’s regional wildlife. That’s a regional sign. It’s not some new language in each state lol. It’s also wild to me that people often say “it still looks cool” not to anyone who knows the language, it looks goofy and disrespectful… and is similar to someone mocking how people speak a language.

Ugh. Trying to blame regional signs or accents is so condescending. Sure my Ozarks accents and phrases are different from the accent and phrases from Boston but we can still understand each other. Do those people think regional signs mean a completely different language??

I’ve had quite a few people tell me that “they sign differently on this side of America than they do on your side“ I was absolutely shocked. Yes they are regional signs, but they don’t sign differently on one side of America than they do the other. 🤦🏼♀️

literally just scolled from a video praising some girl for signing total gibberish and the whole comments section is full of people acting like they know everything about ASL/SEE/etc and, in doing so, making it clear that they know nothing. and then there are always a few Deaf people that no one believes and a few hearing interpreters (including myself) that people actually listen to. it is FULLY cultural appropriation at this point. it feels like they’re trying to remove Deaf people from sign language.

I am not Deaf but I am conversational in ASL and am still learning. However, none of those signs make sense and if Deaf people in the comments are affirming that…y’all need to listen.

In my (hearing) experience of meeting deaf people around the world, I have noticed sign languages all have a foundation to them that is easy to notice. Sign languages vs Whatever this Guy is Doing is like the difference between Music and Random Noises that are definitely not Music.
