Social security gives a COLA every year. I lose more in benefits than I get for that raise every single year. I’m low income and live alone. These small amounts of snap benefits or rent assistance help me survive. Going backward every year is a scary thing. There will come a day when I won’t be sure how I’m going to survive any longer. No I didn’t retire too young, I was rear ended by someone and I’ve had multiple surgeries and was unable to work at the age of 48. I was a nurse for 20 years at that time.

Brother, God Bless You. I build affordable housing in the Midwest and families have to make this decision every day. Do I take the raise or deny it so I can qualify for a safe place to raise my family. Our society is truly messed up.

This. this. this. I got a $2 raise and lost all medical and all but $12 a month in food stamps, and I was absolutely stuck between making a liveable wage and starving.

I'm a disabled senior. I don't receive enough to actually have much at all. We aren't even allowed to have enough savings, to actually help with emergencies. I've just sold my truck for junk, because I didn't have enough saved to cover the repairs.. My story is common. Common. Here's the real kicker; I'm now eligible for assistance for transportation. They send a van across town to pick me up, take me to doctor or shopping. They return to station, come back to pick me up and take me home. Fixing my truck would have cost them less... this is our taxes being wasted intentionally.

Robert, I didn’t know it had a name. Faced by hundreds everyday, because our system of assistance is as broken as education, the cost of living and civil rights. There are ways to help people rise out of poverty. But, it seems that government, state & federal, don’t see it as an urgent issue. They are too busy cutting the very programs that provide some help - WIC, Medicaid, etc.

My sister was denied medicaid while fighting leukemia. she made 1 dollar an hour to much. Her medical bills are over a million. All over a freaking dollar an hour.

I'm in that position now. losing benefits due to an inheritance. not a large inheritance but, I still lose my medicaid, foodstamps and will have to pay for Medicare. I'm losing nearly $500 in benefits plus, my ss will go down over $200 a month. Hopefully, my inheritance lasts until I die. I'm 74 years old.
