@history_4_humans: I also share the story of my neighbor who worked downtown by the trade centers who was missing all day. And how his wife and kids were fearing the worst, crying all day by they hadn’t heard from him. he was unable to get in contact with them because the cell phone service was all down, and because some of the roads and bridges were closed down to get out of New York, he bought a bicycle and biked all the way home. He didn’t get home until the evening and just seeing his family running out and hugging him and crying. It was so beautiful in the midst of such tragedy. #historyteacher #september11 #teachers #nyc
One of my students danced during the moment of silence and made explosion sounds 😐

I teach 2nd & 3rd grade and I was in 2nd grade in 2001. I feel like that really helps me navigate teaching this subject because I have a 7 years olds perspective.

I share my personal story as a freshman high school student living in Miami Florida. I reiterate, like you did, the fact that cell phones were not that prevalent, but I was at a school that had a television in every classroom.

I teach middle school and I was only 5 when 9/11 happened. So every year when my students ask me what it was like I tell them I don’t remember much except that my family was scared and that life as I knew it would be very different growing up. Last year my students told me Covid had the same effect on them, since they were 5 when that happened in their world.

I was 3 when it happened. I wasn’t sure what was happening at all. I was in daycare and I couldn’t figure out why my friends were leaving early. My dad came to pick me up late because he was watching what happened but I just remember him picking me up and then going to get my brother at school and the tv being on all the time. My mom was in New York and trying to get home she worked in the Bronx.

Strange question maybe: would you be open to making such a video explaining about 9/11 from you and possibly your neighbours perspective? I teach English in a Dutch high school and this would be so interesting to them!

Thank you for educating our students on this event. I haven’t been brave enough to teach my sixth graders about it. Always afraid of saying something “wrong” or triggering a kid. I will never forget. I was 32 years old!

Similar situation in a dc suburb at my school. They didn’t tell us anything happened here even though we heard the boom of the plane hitting the pentagon. They told us something happened in New York and we needed to pray for those people (catholic school). Now I’m teaching at the school I went to

If you look up the man in a red bandanna, his name is Welles Crowther. I was named after him. He saved 18 people in north tower or second I don’t remember, but there is a book about him so maybe next year you could show that book to them

I’m originally from Bergen but I lived in Florida by then. My aunt was still in Bergen (up until last month when she moved) and lost a colleague in the attacks on flight 93.

i wasnt born yet, and wouldnt till dec 2003 (thats when they found Saddam Hussien, on their search for Osama Bin Laden and al qaeda), but my parents were. they lived in downriver detroit, Michigan. at the time my mom was 19 and my dad was 22. my mom was woken up by her family after the 1st tower was hit. she got ahold of my dad and had told him to turn on the news, at the time they worked at a video store (that really shows the era that this happened in) and my mom had to work that day. they had rigged coat hangers out the door to get signal to the TV from the news broadcasting what was going on that day. later my dad would join the military and serve in the Iraqi war, help with the bases in Afghanistan where the navy seals that eventually found Bin Laden. I remember the Presidential Adress that President Obama gave after that day, vividly, hoping that one day that this would be over for our country and that we could heal, as a middle schooler. unfortunately I dont know if thats the case and hopefully we can learn from our history and create a better future.

I have a six years old and for whatever reason I was home from school watching cartoons when they all changed to breaking news I remember calling my grandmother and I was just watching. I was scary because we were on a flea path and there was a lot of plants in this guy.. my mother who worked really close to the airport, remembers just circling and circling. I have coworkers who worked at hotels who had to take people in in the ballroom, my parents, friends who nurses who helped get medicine and make sure everyone was OK after the plane landed and I have an aunt who made sandwiches and they wrote a musical about her town and all the sandwiches they made. It’s called to come from away.
