Yesterday around 6:30 Ryker was showing me a trick and ended up kicking his soccer ball into the neighbors backyard. I was cleaning the garage so when Rhett wanted to walk with him to get it, I thought it was no biggie because Ryker had already been helping keep an eye on him. Often times Ryker tells Rhett no and parents him or doesn’t want him to do things, and I have to step in. After Ryker repeatedly told him no and kept walking away, Rhett was really sad so I said go I’m watching as Ryker looked back to see him following. I watched him until he got to the corner and yelled “make it?!” And he replied “YEAH!” So I walked back to the garage. Watching this back, replaying it in my head, I should have said Ryker stop and wait for your brother. Rhett jogged to catch up and I thought he was close behind. As Ryker made his way to the front door, Rhett decided to continue walking past the house. I felt like it had taken awhile (4 minutes) so I went to the sidewalk and I saw Ryker but no Rhett. When I asked him where he was he said “I don’t know, he never came with me?” So I went full panic and started running. I couldn’t see him anywhere. We were yelling his name, looking in driveways, down streets and I quickly turned to Ryker and said “RUN- FIND HIM! I’m getting the car.” I ran home, checked quickly in the garage for him before grabbing my keys, then grabbed my phone in the garage and called 911. It was the scariest few minutes of my life. I asked every single neighbor I drove by if they had seen my baby boy. Nobody. Dispatch was asking what he last wore and how long he has been gone, does he do well if strangers approach. The scariest thing is he really has no fear and no stranger danger. As much as I’ve tried to instill it into him, he’s my social butterfly. I thought for sure somebody had taken him. Not one neighbor saw him? How? He’s only 4, he can’t run well, he couldn’t have gone far, unless, he was taken. Finally, in the distance I saw his silhouette in the glare of the sun, walking with Ryker. A woman had stopped to try to find out where he lived and he wouldn’t answer her, just kept walking. He said he didn’t want to talk to her because he didn’t know her. When he saw Ryker he was so proud he made it around the back of our neighborhood all by himself. I was a mess. I freaked him out a bit when he saw me bawling. We talked a lot. We talked safety and all of the things that can happen. We have also been practicing learning my phone number all day and what else to do if you’re lost. I’m so thankful this turned out the way it did. That Jesus was looking out for my baby. So many things could have happened to him and I am so incredibly thankful it didn’t. Even if you think you’re being safe, do not let them out of your sight UNTIL you know for certain they are safe, where they are supposed to be. I’ve learned my lesson.
