The Plague of Rome (590 AD) During a deadly plague, Pope Gregory the Great saw St. Michael atop the Mausoleum of Hadrian, sheathing his sword — a sign the plague had ended. The site became Castel Sant’Angelo. 3. Mont Saint-Michel (France, 708 AD) St. Michael appeared three times to Bishop Aubert, ordering him to build a church.
