Tonight I said goodbye to my old friend, Steve Duke. At Steve’s Celebration of Life, I was doing pretty well emotionally until I walked to the front and tapped the wooden box containing my friend’s ashes. That did it. I immediately started to tear up. During the ceremony, they asked if anyone wanted to share a story about Steve. I tried. Two words in, I couldn’t speak. Eventually I pulled myself together enough to tell the high jump story, but there were so many others I wanted to tell. So maybe I’ll share a few here. Once upon a time, Steve and I double-dated for a high school dance. Homecoming? Prom? I honestly don’t remember. What I DO remember is my parents were out of town for the weekend. So naturally, Steve and I brought our dates back to my house. A little fire in the fireplace, a little hot tubbing… maybe an adult beverage, maybe not. Steve and his date were making out on the couch. My date and I were doing the same in a chair when suddenly Steve’s date said: “I smell smoke.” We looked at the fireplace and saw smoke pouring out above the mantel. I thought maybe the flue was closed. Nope. Then a giant flame burst out of the wall! Four high school kids FREAKED! We’re running around half naked—or more—screaming like crazy. I told the girls to call 911 while Steve and I ran to the kitchen for water. Our brilliant firefighting strategy? Three-quart saucepans. We started scooping water out of the hot tub and throwing it on the fire. It only made the fire madder. Eventually the smoke got too thick and we ran outside. Then came the fire department. And the police. And an ambulance. And seemingly every neighbor within three blocks. I ran to a neighbor’s house to call my parents. Mom answered and I screamed: “THE F—ING HOUSE IS ON FIRE!” My mother’s classic response: “Danny! Don’t cuss!” Really, Mom?!? THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE! The firefighters got the fire out, brought in fans to clear the smoke, and eventually let us back inside so we could get dressed. The emergency vehicles left. The neighbors went home. Now Steve and I were two teenage boys with one-track minds. How do we reestablish the mood? We’re discussing our options when we notice another little puff of smoke coming from the mantel. Then another. And another. Oh, hell. Call 911. AGAIN. Out came the cavalry. AGAIN. And all the neighbors. AGAIN. This time the firefighters tore the whole wall apart around the fireplace and told us we needed to find somewhere else to sleep. And that officially ended our romantic evening. We never did manage to reestablish the mood. 😂 I’ve laughed about that night with Steve many times over the years. Tonight, I laugh and cry. That’s the strange thing about losing someone you’ve known for so much of your life. You’re not just saying goodbye to the man you knew today. You’re saying goodbye to the kid who was there all those years ago—the kid who helped you fight a house fire with saucepans full of hot-tub water. I couldn’t tell all the stories tonight. So I’ll tell them here. Goodbye, Steve. Thanks for all the memories, old friend. And wherever you are… I hope you’ve finally figured out how to reestablish the mood. Rest easy, buddy. ❤️ #friendship
