Because once you know where the story is going, you start noticing how much was hiding in plain sight. The tiny figures standing around the house aren’t always random people. The strange symbol that keeps appearing — on the necklace, the telephone pole and elsewhere — isn’t just production design. Joan doesn’t simply happen to meet Annie at the perfect moment. Even the miniature houses Annie builds quietly reinforce one of the movie’s biggest ideas: the Graham family isn’t really in control of what happens to them. They’re pieces being moved around inside something much larger. That idea is built into the filmmaking itself. A real bedroom becomes a miniature. Day suddenly becomes night.
