My son didn’t say heaps of words then at 2 he exploded, they tried to make me worry before 2. A surgeon I know her son didn’t say a word before 3 and he’s totally normal and fine. Children learn differently, don’t make yourself feel bad. The best & I think easiest thing you could try to incorporate into your life is reading, helps language immensely. There’s nothing wrong with him or you. You’re doing a great job!!

my son is a gestalt language processing, so he can speak very well but doesn't understand the a question is being asked to him. we started speech a 2 months ago and he is responding so well now. early intervention is so important well done to you!

My son is now 2 years old I took him to a speech therapist a month ago and it was useless due to him just not being interested in wanting to talk cause he feels like he doesn’t need to because I understand what he wants and don’t give him time to tell me I just give it to him. Speech therapist gave me some tips at home to do since we as mothers have the biggest influence on them. Also keep in mind many boys don’t talk till there about 3 x

My son was 4 when they finally listened to me and his speech delay. Turns out he has further issues surrounding his nervous system and him not dropping the baby reflexes (occuler, atonic neck reflex and his Morro reflex) this has only been diagnosed 2 years into school. I'm so glad you are getting the help whilst he is young

I have been pushing with my GP and the child health nurses to see a speech therapist for my son (2 years & 1 month). He only says about 15-20 words but he says them his way, not pronounced correctly. Only I can understand what he means but if a stranger were to hear him speak it would probably sound like gibberish. But apparently his GP and the nurses think that is completely age appropriate for him?? Is this true?? Am I really just over reacting??

As a fellow SLP mum, be kind to yourself. Also, be mindful it’s a journey, don’t expect immediate results, this was something that was a bit of a shock to the system for myself. ❤️

My son is the same as Chance and is in therapy because of a missed diagnosis of oral ties, he doesn’t have a speech delay but more so pronounces a few things wrong and has a suite of other issues (mainly mouth breathing and drooling when he has all of his teeth). I felt so annoyed because I thought he was tongue tied as a baby but got dismissed, this only got picked up because of the daycare dentist which I’m eternally grateful for! Just wanted to say you’re doing a great job and don’t feel any mum guilt (easier said than done) - you only know what you know and we are all doing the best we can 💕

It’s nothing you did or didn’t do and 2.5yo is still so young to begin intervention therapies so be proud of yourself!! 🥹 I remember having all of these same thoughts too 🫶🏼

How did you decide speech pathology was needed? My daughter is nearly 1.5 and understands so much but only has one consistent word and not much else expressively. So unsure what is normal and when it’s a concern. Did your gp or someone recommend?

I needed to see this !! My 2yr old son doesn’t talk AT ALL and only I can understand what he wants and needs we’ve gone through GPs, health clinics and they all just referred me to a hearing clinic to get his hearing check but they couldn’t get the test done because he just loses the plot when people touch his ears so I’m back in a waiting list again after already waiting 4 months but no one will refer me until his hearing test is done. I also got a phone call saying the only thing they can suggest is a parent support group where the parents zoom call and talk about strategies which I’m not keen on I’d rather just have a speech therapist actually work with my son .. I’m Gold Coast based if anyone or any speechy can help PLEASE a desperate guilty crying mum of a toddler whose getting frustrated and a 8month old baby boy and working myself as a full time teacher

My son was the exact same at 2, we went through the same process. He’s been doing Speech & OT for 18 months. Lots of time at home modelling language through play and my son’s language has developed so much. I am so proud, he’s also now started to be conversational, he sings all the time, chats away while playing and we can have a chat rather than just him talking to request his needs. We still get the occasional pushing, biting ect (mostly if his 1 year old brother is in his space and he’s asked him to leave a toy alone or said he doesn’t want to share and obviously his 1 year old brother has no concept of personal space)… but it’s amazing to see how much he’s grown and he is soooo much more regulated and so clever. It’s a challenging journey, don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever need any advice or to vent. Early intervention is incredible!
