Trying to conceive? Timing matters more than you think. One of the biggest mistakes I see couples make is waiting until the day they think ovulation is happening before having sex. You actually want sperm there before the egg is released. Sperm can survive in fertile cervical mucus for up to around 5 days, while the egg is only viable for roughly 12 to 24 hours after ovulation. That means your fertile window starts before ovulation, not just on ovulation day. For many couples, the highest probability days are usually the 1 to 2 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation. This is why I do not want couples putting all the pressure on one single day. A practical approach is intercourse every 1 to 2 days throughout the fertile window so you are covering the days leading up to ovulation. And if your cycles are irregular, this becomes even more important because predicting ovulation from a calendar alone can be unreliable. We can use things like cervical mucus changes, LH testing, cycle length, basal body temperature and sometimes pathology to understand what your ovulation is actually doing. Because sometimes a couple tells me they have been trying for months, but once we map the cycle properly, we realise they have been consistently missing their most fertile days. That does not mean timing explains every fertility issue, but it is one of the first things worth getting right. At Nourishing Apothecary we work with both female and male fertility and can help you understand your cycle, ovulation, pathology and the bigger fertility picture. Australia wide consultations are available via Zoom. You can book a free discovery call through nourishingapothecary.com #tryingtoConceive #ttc #fertility #ovulation #fertilewindow
