September 11, often referred to as 9/11, was a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks against the United States on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, which resulted in the deadliest act of terrorism in human history. On that morning, nineteen militants associated with the extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial passenger jetliners mid-flight over the eastern United States. Two of the planes were intentionally crashed into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York City, causing both of the 110-story skyscrapers to collapse within two hours and devastate Lower Manhattan. A third plane was flown into the western face of the Pentagon, the headquarters of the U.S. military just outside Washington, D.C. The attacks resulted in 2,977 fatalities, a staggering toll that included 441 first responders who died while trying to rescue people from the burning towers, and thousands of others have since suffered from long-term illnesses caused by the toxic debris.
