The only thing we learned from this is to get out anytime anything happens anywhere near immediately. We don’t wait to see what managers want us to do.

Even in this horrific situation there were bosses who told you to continue working. I had a boss who said he would cite me for insubordination when I said I was leaving because of a fire at a restaurant next door. I worked on Dey Street, 17th floor, across from Church, for AT&T. I left anyway — by elevator. This was before 9/11.
