When Alfie was diagnosed with Stage 5 IVDD at the age of just 4, we were completely heartbroken and overwhelmed. Our whole world changed in an instant. I felt so helpless that I couldn’t do anything to make him feel better. Alfie came back from a usual walk to become completely paralysed from the waist down with in a couple of hours. Alfie underwent surgery, had no DPS and a 20% chance of ever walking again and that potentially he should be euthanised. But we weren’t going to give up on him. He showed so much resilience and strength through his recovery and physiotherapy. Bringing us to now, Alfie is loving life in his wheels, exploring life just as he did before. His outlook on life can teach us all to be more positive. Proving everyone wrong. We are so incredibly proud of him. And so thankful we have him the chance to show us what he’s made of. The fear of IVDD occurring again petrifies me. But I know it can be done and that we can give everything we have to turn it around.
