I’m not posting this for you to like it (or me, for that matter) or for follows. I’m posting this to show you how trauma dogs respond to every single new thing. Outside is Sadie’s biggest fear, and we are doing what we can (yes, early!) to try to combat it. And yes, every person in our foster group is doing the same with theirs. I thought about turning comments off on this post because I can already see the flood of, “you’re moving too fast! Slow down!!!!” comments (the same one I received about STAIRS 👀, which she has already mastered going up, by the way—because she wanted to!). I understand people want her to decompress. She has HOURS a day that I don’t show on here where she does just that. But that’s not all we’re supposed to do here—as her chosen foster family. She DID have several days after we first brought her home where she and Nova did almost nothing BUT sleep, uninterrupted. Since then, however, she’s shown interest in so many things, so I’m introducing scary things slowly and only for a little at a time. Why should I hold her back? She’s been contained enough. If she wants to be a normal(-ish) dog someday, we have to push them (A LITTLE AT A TIME) to do hard things. We stayed on this court for less than 5 minutes, and she did get up and walk around (I didn’t video because I was helping her). These are the raw moments that I feel like never get shown, bc of the (insane and cruel/judgy) backlash I’m likely to receive in the comments after I hit post. I am not new to helping scared animals and if you know me or have followed me for any significant amount of time, you’d know that. I’m not going to repeat my credentials in every post. If you don’t like what you see, don’t watch. Find an equally abused dog to help near you and show me how your way is better. Otherwise, don’t tell me what to do with our dog (yes still a foster through Second Chance Animals of Greater Milwaukee) who we plan to adopt if given the green light in a few months. She loves me, I love her, and you can bet I’m doing everything I can in my life to make her feel happy, loved, safe, and normal for the first time in her life.
