Cosmetic procedures, dermatologists, trainers, chefs, stylists, surgeries, recovery, and years of maintenance can easily total hundreds of thousands (and for some public figures, millions) over the course of a lifetime. Which means the average person is constantly being sold a fantasy they could never realistically attain. Because beauty is not just about effort. It is also about genetics, money, time, and access. And that points to a larger overall point. Beauty functions like every other scarce form of status. If everyone could buy it, it would lose much of the social power that makes it valuable in the first place. Just as money loses value when everyone has it, beauty loses status when it is no longer scarce. That's why we wanted to sit down with Dr. Renee Engeln.
