Instead, when another American Airlines flight attendant became ill, Amy agreed to cover the trip and reported for Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles. It was a decision no one could have imagined would matter so much. When the aircraft was hijacked, Amy used an onboard phone to reach American Airlines on the ground. For more than 10 minutes she calmly described what she could see, reported injuries aboard the aircraft and provided seat numbers that helped identify the hijackers. Those listening knew Amy personally. She was not simply a voice coming from an aircraft. She was their colleague, explaining an unfolding hijacking while remaining remarkably composed. Shortly before contact was lost, Amy reported that the aircraft was flying extremely low. Flight 11 struck the North Tower at 8:46 a.m. Amy was 35 years old, a wife and mother of two.
