ENHYPEN Jungwon found himself at the center of an unexpected cultural misstep. On July 18, the 21-year-old wore a graphic Borat T-shirt in a TikTok dance video choreographed with Kazakh influences. Some Kazakh fans quickly pointed out the connection to Sacha Baron Cohen’s 2006 comedy, which satirizes Kazakhstan through exaggerated, often offensive stereotypes of backwardness, sexism, and cultural ignorance. The backlash was swift but measured. Jungwon didn’t dodge it. Around 8-9 a.m. Kazakhstan time on July 19, he went live on Weverse from what looked like a quiet hotel room, still in a camouflage hoodie over a casual tee. Speaking directly to the camera, he admitted he had no idea about the film’s implications. “I thought it was just a T-shirt,” he said, gesturing openly. He explained he immediately threw it out, deleted the original video, and took full responsibility. “I didn’t know the meaning behind it,” Jungwon continued, running a hand through his hair in a moment of visible discomfort. He emphasized he’d be more careful moving forward and appreciated fans bringing it to his attention despite the time difference. The sincerity landed well with many. Fans praised his maturity, noting how rare it is for idols to address issues so promptly and unscripted, especially mid-tour after high-energy performances of tracks like “Echoes” and “Chaconne.”
