Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple) is one of the oldest and most sacred Buddhist sites in Nepal. Located on a hill about 3 km west of Kathmandu, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley. The name “Swayambhu” means “self-arisen” or “self-existent,” reflecting the belief that the sacred hill and stupa emerged naturally from a lotus that grew in an ancient lake covering the valley. The white dome of the stupa symbolizes the world, while the golden spire represents the path to enlightenment. On all four sides of the spire are the all-seeing Eyes of Buddha, symbolizing wisdom and compassion watching over humanity. The symbol between the eyes is the Nepali number १ (one), representing the unity of all beings. Swayambhunath is a unique place where Buddhism and Hinduism exist in harmony. The complex includes Buddhist monasteries, Hindu shrines, prayer wheels, colorful prayer flags, and the famous monkeys that have earned it the nickname **“Monkey Temple.” It is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kathmandu Valley.
