Bruce the dog had a bit more of a paddle than his owner probably had in mind when the kayak he was in got loose and was blown out to sea at Bamburgh in Northumberland. The German Shepherd's sea adventure led to a multi-vessel coastguard search, with the pooch being found by the two-man crew of the Serenity tour boat. And the rescue turned out to be quite emotional, with the captain, Jimmy Reid, telling media that he went through this “heart-wrenching thing of thinking the dog was going to go in the water and stay there”. “So, when we actually got him on board and knew he was safe... we were both very elated.” Mr Reid said his crewman has two German Shepherds, so saving Bruce, “hit pretty close to home”. Bruce’s owner initially tried to swim after him, but “did the right thing” by turning around and calling for help, Mr Reid said. The dog is thought to have drifted around 4km (2.5 miles) before he was found.
