No, I don’t believe my mother sacrificed herself by staying in that marriage. I believe she stayed because there were benefits and comforts she wanted from the marriage and my father had his own reasons for staying too. Sometimes I wish they had simply divorced and gone their separate ways, instead of creating an environment that affected our nervous systems from childhood. What hurts even more is that they never let us see the benefits they were getting from staying together. Instead, especially with my mother, we were constantly made to feel like she was the victim, like we were burdens to her. There was manipulation, guilt, and gaslighting, and I grew up feeling like she never really wanted us. So, no, I don’t believe she stayed in that marriage for us. She stayed for herself, and my father stayed for his own reasons too. And it took me more than 30 years to finally understand that.
