⚙️ Nearly 180 years of history hidden in the North Georgia mountains! Built in 1848 by Willis Rabun Woody, Skeenah Mill was once an important part of everyday life in this mountain community, grinding corn and later wheat and rye. But this old mill has quite a history. 🌽 1848: The original grist mill was built. 🪵 Before the Civil War: Its original wooden dam was replaced with a stone dam built by enslaved laborers. ⚙️ 1932: The mill was converted from turbines to an overshot waterwheel. 🌊 1969: A devastating flood destroyed the historic stone dam. 🛠️ Today: The current owners are preserving the mill, its original artifacts, and its incredible history. Two sets of original millstones remain inside, and one of the old turbines is even believed to be buried beneath the waterfall! We had the pleasure of meeting the owner, who graciously gave us a personal tour and shared stories about the mill’s fascinating past. Experiences like this are what make exploring Georgia’s backroads so rewarding. 📍 Skeenah Creek Campground & Mill | North Georgia, near Suches and Blue Ridge 🏕️ Located at a creekside campground 💦 Features a 12-foot waterfall and historic waterwheel 🏛️ Historic mill dating to 1848 Sometimes the best places aren’t the ones everyone knows about. They’re the ones where someone takes the time to tell you the story. Have you ever stumbled across this historic Georgia mill? #learnhistoryontiktok #northgeorgia
